PCIT works in two phases that build on each other:

Child directed interaction comes first (CDI)—This first phase is all about connection. You follow your child’s lead in play while you learn specific skills that increase positive communication, connection, and mutual enjoyment.

Parent directed interaction comes next (PDI)— Once the foundation of connection is in place, this phase helps you learn clear, calm, and effective limit-setting and behavior management strategies. You’ll learn how to give effective commands and reinforce good behavior in a way that feels confident and connected.
